The shoot for the Lifetime film the other day didn’t go as I had hoped. I was interning as a production assistant and had been asked what I was interested in learning. I told them camera and film, because I’ve never even been around actual film before, and it’s an entirely different thing from video. I know nothing about film, MSU doesn’t teach it, and it’s embarrassing because that’s what I want to work with for the rest of my life, you know?
Well when I actually got there, there was no learning involved. I did a bunch of manly things like setting up tents and unloading equipment trucks. After that, when they were ready to film, they put me and the rest of the PAs (Pennsylvanias, or, if you must, Production Assistants) on “lock down,” which meant I stood outside by a door for literally five hours to make sure nobody walks in to the film set. During that time I was completely alone and separated from the production, except to hear the occasional “cut, we’re going again in two minutes” over my walkie talkie.
After we had dinner I asked to be closer so they let me watch for the last hour of filming (gee how nice of them). I still never got to learn anything or ask questions, but I at least got to see the camera, and how they light for film, meter, measure focal distance, etc. I took a few pictures but they’re pretty worthless because of my effing cameraphone. Descriptions are in tooltips for each image.

So that sucked, although I’ll admit it was fun to see everything even if it was completely hands-off and brief. This was definitely a well-budgeted professional film set. They shot on super 16mm film with Panavision equipment. They were all professional actors, we had craft services and a catered dinner. One of the makeup girls did special effects makeup for the film Titanic. There were whole crews for each department, like one guy that just changed the lenses, one guy that just pulled the focus, etc.
I’m just really glad I didn’t come away from that seeing how it “really is” and not wanting to do films anymore or something. I was worried that might happen.
I finally decided on the new phone I want for renewing my contract. I decided on the Samsung SLM because I like how it feels in my hand or something creepy like that. And it has all the good Bluetooth profiles and the faster HSDPA 3G protocol. But best of all it’s free. That should be coming Monday. I’m pretty excited.
Sickeningly excited. *segue*
Yes, I seem to be sick. It started last night in my head, really weird, um, head feelings. Today I have it really bad and a swollen tongue somehow? Weird man. I’m going to the doctor tomorrow, but I think it might be a stroke. So if I wake up and don’t know who any of you are, it’s not a malicious gesture I assure you.
